www.qjddesign.com i have been trying to write the ultimate short story for many years. like most of us, these tales sit collecting dust in our desk draws and are rarely read. i truly love and am passionate about a story that has a twist or a unique revelation of sorts at the end. i have finally decided to publish a few of these tales and like any of my creative endeavours - i risk saying far to much. i have decided to publish under my own ARTSMAD label, which is my surname backwards. I have employed this technique whilst creating names of towns, places and people in my various tales. Grebnezium is the town Yip Trip is improving through better design, it also happens to be my home town. STORY ONE -Arachnid sunrise is a science fiction story - Ive written it from the perspective of someone trying to get a warning of impending destruction to the oblivious , whilst evading vicious enemies. chapter 1 can be found at - www.arachnidsunrise.blogspot.coma technique i have employed to launch the arachnid sunrise is to put old leather folders together with the story inside. These folders are filled with objects i find in charity shops. interesting items like compasses, rulers, pens, pictures, old photographs and old maps. i then leave these at stations, airports, restaurants worldwide. whenever a friend goes traveling they leave these little packages where ever. so far in the town of Whitby - where Dracula came to shore in England, Dubai airport, on British rail to London, Heathrow and all over Cape Town. i was inspired by the book crossing craze and enjoy blurring reality and make believe. I imagine the folk who find them looking for the owner and wondering what the blue blazers they've stumbled upon. perhaps running home and hiding under the bed - a place i used to find solace from life's killer noonoos. (i say used to - i just cant fit under their anymore.) Ive also started harvesting bottles from my beach combing and am releasing them back in the wild with a passenger - my story. Ive always wanted to find a message in a bottle on the beach. STORY CONCEPT TWOa few of my other short tales are - Frederiks donkey, matters of the mind, Petus's lesson. They are also published and you can find them on a blog site called the South African short stories. http://www.qjdstory.blogspot.com/well if their is anyone finding their way to this blog - i hope you enjoy reading a story with a twist. The year is 1010ad, Tablebay is filled with the earths warrior tribes. Viking longboats, Phoenician trading vessels, Egyptian craft, Chinese and Japanese fighting ships. The 3 dominant local tribes, Hottentots, Strandlopers and San. traveling dignitaries have come from far inland and far up the African coast, Zulu kings and Xhosa rulers. Toltec tribesman on their astro travels, Hans and Souix elders . All shoulder to shoulder looking towards a common directive. representatives from each and every man child clan. to commemorate the unification treaty the tribes agreed to create the universal warrior. he would take on aspects of each and every clan represented. it was given to the San scribes the task to capture the imagery. Nado Storm - controller of the cape winter storms and summer trade winds. protector of the unification treaty. The tribes gave their nod of approval and it was so. the future passage of time looked prosperous for man.
as is true of all mans best endeavours - a breakaway clan who wanted to control all , who where not part of the main warrior collective, led by an evil sorceress, decided to seize the day. using ancient dark art techniques they poisoned the minds of the collective. banished Nado to the dark recesses of the Kalkbay caves and plunged the earth into darkness and turmoil.
Nado Storm - is awaiting his rebirth - when once again all mankind's tribes are gathered on cape soil. 2010 is set to be more than just a sporting event - as the poison would have worked its way through and a new day dawns.

imagine buildings, suburbs that have a far more complicated purpose - way beyond just living or working space - imagine if the buildings from one perspective all lined up to create musical notes. creating architecture that goes beyond - i mean way beyond - form following function - creating a much greater function and living and working space being a component of the greater function. one could create cities that keyed into the works of Mozart and the like. creating multi dimensional living environments that inspire a few more of our senses.
what if buildings or cladding created optical illusions. case study 1 and 2 - black roof white street - count the dots
QJD design studio has designed over 80 new homes and 300 alterations to existing homes. our clients have ranged from a british lord to artists to families in Cape Towns informal settlements. We derive influence from several architectural styles , creating unique homes using influence from a wide and varied spectrum. we have also contracted our services to several cape town architects - being the principle draughting practice for the first Cape Quarter development and Willowbridge center. offering a full range of services from concept design drawings to working drawings and schedules. We have designed homes overseas and all around South Africa. designing homes in most of Cape Towns southern suburb estates. Baviaanskloof estate, Hillcrest estate, Stonehaven estate, Klein slangkop estate, Blue water estate to mention a few. we have just been appointed to design 2 homes in Arabella estate to add to our growing list. We are a design studio with design concepts across the board however our principle discipline is architectural design. we design furniture and dabble in several other disciplines from graphic design to sculpture. As design principles can be successfully applied to all creative disciplines. we have just launched Erxell design and marketing as our sister practice. We want to be able to offer an additional creative design portfolio with a huge difference. our next venture is to create South Africas first crop circle inspired home deep in the Karoo. incorporating principles from earth branded architecture, perceived kinetic architecture , disintegration of perspective, architectural shadow projection. To the first ever sculptured truss design. It has been inspired by the distant track of our ancestors to our present future techno perfect. our very dark green ambition is to collectively create a system that's by products are pure water and oxygen. impossible?? - i think we are close.
to follow the launch of Erxell and QJD design studios eco green recycled drawing board is the artists easel - designers using the board or easel are subliminally reminded to recycle. i have designed the artists easel in the same mould as the drawing board using recycled materials . to order either board or easel just email me and i can send price list.
to create my series of new buildings i created a new point of departure for myself - what if the design went way beyond its obvious function. and we created an over and above concept or task for the design to acheive. case study 3 - shadow projections on muizenberg beach-proposed erxell development 1. what if the focus of the design was to create a shadow of a ball that moved along the beach as the sun set. this would create structures and shapes that would evolve from this exercise. it would change our inherited box like thinking and create a series of shapes not yet seen.
from one of six perspectives the arranged buildings or sculptural elements merge into one object. at this vantage point a figure of an ox is created. the buildings are arranged in a hexagon and represent a different sculpture from each of the six vantage points. the other vantage points are represented by a man, woman , eagle, lion , horse.
a concept for a future sky scraper - i enjoy the welding of organic elements with machine - the borg concept encapsulates this idea perfectly - i propose my 7 of 9 gothic building.
above my work station i have a piston head which i found in the namib desert 13 years ago. it now houses my growing pen collection. One of my clients creates glass eyes and unbeknown to me whilst we where discussing the design of the new house, she was sculpting my eye. Its nice to know i have my spare eye staring at me whilst i work. I also in good faith purchased a very expensive pen which i found out later is fake. so i now am the proud owner of a mont plonk pen. Which also forms part of my collection of dudads.
As much as 90% of mans architectural endeavours are drab and have absolutely no imagination. As if a gaggle of accountants where the only professionals on site. To achieve Vision, Imagination and Depth to any structure , architectural forms need to go way beyond one function. For a building or buildings to create an A.S.P with the sun will take immense planning. The architectural forms that evolve out of this planning will completely revolutionise the architectural landscape as we know it. for our structures to become more than just big boxes small boxes our creative point of departure needs to completely change. To truly show that we understand the nuances of light and shadow - should not our structures create sculpture within the shadow. architectural shadow projection A.S.P.

The vision of a drawing board made from recycled plastic goes far beyond the actual board itself. The true concept of the board is to create a communicative link between folk living in a cape town informal settlement, industry and us designers. as a designer who has never lived in an informal settlement, never weathered a cape storm in crossroads with my 2 kids. insecurely wondering if tomorrow tb, gangsta's or aids will come a knocking. i cannot begin to grasp the complex problems faced when trying to improve such an environment. its almost arrogant of me to impose my middle class, fish hoek upbringing on such a sensitive set of circumstances. Judith my wonderful domestic worker who has a home built by the new south African wunder design institute.(sarcastic for those out of townee's - we all know wunder is German and Germans are supposedly precise.) she tells me the rain pours through her walls during a storm. so the wunder design institute champions zippo the horse - boogger all. They seem to champion the rain through the freaking walls of her supposedly brand new rdp house. - a back handed politician in the mix. - mmmmmm me thinks. not so preciouse. The recycled plastic drawing board represents - a better life through better design. it will hopefully come to represent a communicative link, a creative work station. outside affluent designers imposing a better way of living for squatter camp inhabitants. these designers who have never had to survive a cape town informal settlement night. cannot ever impose a system on an informal settlement family man exposed to the brutality of his everyday life. only this man, living in the circumstance can suggest realistic improvements, only he can inform the outside world of his and his families daily plight. and suggest minute improvements to this daily dilemma. from waking upbat 4am, dressing his kids to his 10km walk through squaller to the transport terminus. he is confronted with a thousand suggestions to improve these million and 1 design possibilities. my proposal is to introduce this recycled plastic drawing board into the community centers of these settlements. industry, government the man with a buck in his pocket can pay a minimum price for every drawing eventually harvested from this system. and those ideas that are revolutionary can be taken forward and the informal settlement creator of these proposed ideas brought on board to see his vision from concept to reality. a direct link can be immediately made between improving the informal settlement environment, better design and cash is king in the pocket. - a drawing is worth a thousand words. if the board eventually starts finding its way into homes as a creative workstation so much the better. i have shown a picture of San rock art in the jpgs above. many uninformed folks understanding of this art is that its basic and childlike. this concept is furthest from reality. the fact that all rock paintings are derived from immediate , reality experiences make them dynamic . perspective, front on, side on, fore shortening are all displayed in rock art pictures thousands of years old. Most rock art is a unique 1 off . the renaissance painters where shouting eureka with these concepts a few hundred years ago. this is testament enough at the power of a drawing. the San artist speaking to their gods have also managed to communicate to us through time. with scholars still trying to code the exact messages sent all those years ago. i have also included in my jpg a word in 20 different languages. unless you speak the language the word chair will mean nothing to you. however the picture of a chair is universally understood immediately. this idea has Merritt - i am currently speaking to various sponsors to make this concept a reality - i am also speaking to you if you have read this far - maybe you can help with a suggestion to get this from thought to actuality. the concept of Bling your board will help improve the board as it progesses from wright brothers , to spitfire and eventually super sonic jet - whats next?
after cape towns last massive storm i went on my customary beach combing walk along muizenberg beach to cemetery. The storm and the surging tide had pushed a huge amount of debris onto the beach. exciting stuff - i could hardly contain myself - i say debris as it was definitely not the usual organic material im accustomed to - shells, driftwood, sea spoils. bearing in mind i actually ended up walking 1km and in that 1km i found - 22 slip slops - none matching - 30 light bulbs - munged wetsuits - about 100 unused condoms still in their rappers - so im thinking theirs a crazy cult of people sacrificing wrapped condoms in the sea to prevent pregnancy. i kid you not -i found tekkies, tons of plastic rubbish , nothing to constitute the treasure i used to find. so i decided to sculpt a virus madusa chair in the dunes. it was a throne to all the crap that washed up during the storm. i had great fun dragging all the junk to my centralised location and sculpting the virus madusa chair. took me a good 5 hours. as humans we can collectively sit on this chair and marvel at our amazing ingenuity. we cut off one polluting element and 10 grow in its place. as a virus we sure accomplish our destructive task well - i took a photo but a drawing was easier to depict. i brought in seaweed elements to exagerate the effect. my drawing does not actually show the real amount of trash. i was subliminary still trying to make my creation look pretty.

In a cave deep in the cape peninsula kalkbay mountains is an ancient rock painting depicting the character we now call the cape doctor or cape of storms. this rock painting is what forms the basis my new comic character, super hero Nado Storm. Nado Storm is Cape Towns answer to the super heroes of american culture. He stands for what is honourable and crushes all that is currupt within our system. Nado storm the comic is under construction with the first collectors story confined to just 10 first edition copies. I plan to introduce Nado the new South African super hero in a comic strip in a local news paper. starting with the beginning of the concept. a group of cavers stumble on the cave painting and unleash the understanding of the ancient cape of storm character - South Africa is so desparately in need of a spiderman or superman which is essentially a South African and can fictiously clean up the over whelming criminal element.
the energy of the ancient culture that first depicted this character has now been absorbed into all preceding inhabitants of the cape. we are all linked to the ferocity of the storms by our life styles. disrespect the earth the cape and we all reap the whirlwind. this character or ancient warrior controls the forces of nature that unleash themselves on our Cape Town coast during winter. a Thor type hero - not a god but a universal soldier. he wears the skins of his prey - the headdress of a caracal cat, the teeth of the great white shark. the clouds and storm elements he controls are the ancient cape buffalo herds, cape lion and cape elephant that roamed our coast line for centuries and revisit us to remind us of their existence. a swirling mass of animal storm clouds , a reminder that shows us we are not far off from becoming extinct ourselves.
the character is of no race and represents us all, he does not represent any 1 culture. he is an amalgamation of the rich tapestry of culture which is cape town. the ancient San and Hottentots used to wear the skins of their prey, I propose the character also wears a lorica segmantata - which keys him into a European influence. The cave painting deep in the kalkbay mountains needs to be revealed to the world. Nado is ready to do battle with the Gangsta element of our society. bring the rain.
attached please find jpgs of the character along with the cave paintings depicting the character. Nado Storm , Doctor Cape and squall are awaiting their launch - Capetonian criminals beware - Nado storm takes absolutely no prisoners.
my latest sculpture - an ode to minions of a deceased designer. maybe going into the new century we need a fresh outlook to our architectural furure.
Mello G Damstra was born in Leeuwaarden, Friesland in the Netherlands in 1873. Mello was the son of a Dutch architect, who was in turn the son of a builder and designer in Friesland. Mello studied at the french college Oudenbosch and was an accomplished ice skater. By 1895 Mello was working in Cradock in the Cape, where he saw the construction of several houses, employed as an inspector of public works. On the outbreak of the Anglo boer war my granddad left for Holland via Durban. A delightful little story my dad tells as his dad was buying his boat ticket. The boat was full and not taking on additional passengers, Mello used the now famous damstra family line of. "Well one more dam straw wont break the camels back". and with much laughter he was ushered onto the crowded boat. I am waiting to use that line but have not yet found occasion. He went to New York shortly afterwards and having travelled through the United States and Canada, worked as a journeyman draughtsman in Sacramento, California where he won a prize for his design for a log cabin. I would love to see that design and might travel their to piece his American journey together. He was employed as a draughtsman by a San Franciscan architect, Newton J. Tharp. A chance meeting with some South African friends drew him back to South Africa. Where he settled in Stellenbosch where he designed many of the residences of the professors of the time, at the university. His taste and skill became known far and wide and in 1909 he went to live in Cape Town. Oranjezicht contains many a magnificent specimen as a testimony of his matchless taste. I know my grandfather designed the three homes at the top of Orange street on the right hand side as your facing table mountain. He designed a few other structures further down Orange street also on the right. Other Cape Town suburbs where Mello designed homes are Muizenberg and Seapoint. He was termed a maverick architect as he never followed one single style and in many respects created his own unique architectural language. My grandfather passed away in 1945. My dad who's design skills i truly admire had other responsibilities and having six kids of his own never followed his design ability. However his sketches of buildings and people inspired me to follow the course i have and to learn the language of draughting and design. I was born almost exactly 100 years after my grandfather to the day. I have also started my career as a journeyman draughtsman. Although the shoes i have to fill will always elude me for size. I would like to follow a tradition started generations ago. some of the facts above come from a book published in 1929 called Sport and Sportsmen of SA and Rhodesia. to design a building using the concept of Earth Branded Architecture.
mans endeavours to communicate with his gods using sketches is well evidenced around the world. he might not have dialled the right number at times. however he did manage to speak through time to us. as mans technology allows us to view our world from above, it opens up an array of design possibilities. Henry Matisse advised his younger colleagues to fly, for there was no better key to the optical code of the world. now through Google earth average man in the street can fly. apart from the Nazca lines, crop circles are another source of inspiration. there other worldly allure is undeniable and keying into their aesthetic appeal is dynamic. i have pulled my logo into a building to illustrate the possibilities open to us as far as E.B.A architecture is concerned. we can create crop circle buildings or cities that key into their coat of arms. Using hundreds of buildings to create a complex pattern on the earth. This type of design would take discipline and collaboration however the cities that key into this concept would be able to use this opportunity to unite its citizens with 1 bigger picture idea. We can also speak through time to future generations and let them know we had the foresight, vision and discipline to create beauty for future generations to enjoy.
STORY'S I TELL MY CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN'S STORY WITH THE MOST IMPACT ON ME WAS – YOU KNOW MY NAME IS SIMON – AND THE THINGS I DRAW COME TRUE. THIS LITTLE LINED DRAWING WITH SIMON CLIMBING OVER THE FENCE INTO THE LAND OF CHALK DRAWINGS HELD ME SPELL BOUND. '
IT WAS ONE OF THE REASONS I DECIDED TO START MY DESIGN JOURNEY. I ALSO LIKE TO INSPIRE MY CHILDREN TO FOLLOW A DESIGN FUTURE AND THAT IS WHY I STARTED TELLING THEM STORY’S ABOUT YIP TRIP. I USE MY STORY’S TO INTRODUCE THEM TO NEW WAYS OF DESIGNING FURNITURE, FUTURISTIC LIVING ENVIRONMENTS, DIFFERENT HOME DESIGNS. HOPEFULLY IN A SMALL WAY TO ALLOW THEM TO SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO BETTER DESIGN OUR PLACE IN THE ENVIRONMENT. THEY EVOLVE MY SIMPLE IDEAS INTO THEIR OWN AND I AM ALWAYS FASCINATED BY WHAT THEIR UNRESTRICTED THOUGHT YIELDS. HOPEFULLY WHEN THEY HEAD OFF INTO THE WORK ENVIRONMENT, THEY WILL BE INSPIRED TO CREATE BETTER IDEAS AND HABITATS OF THERE OWN. BOOK SERIES 1 –THE YIP TRIP SERIES. YIP TRIP IS A SOUTH AFRICAN BOY LIVING IN A SEASIDE VILLAGE CALLED GREBNEZIUM (MUIZENBERG BACKWARDS) HE LOVES BEACH COMBING ESPECIALLY AFTER A HUGE CAPE STORM. YIP TRIP LOVES BIG STORMS, WHICH WASH UP THE NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE. EACH STORY I HAVE WRITTEN HAS YOUNG YIP TRIP FINDING FLOTSAM AND JETSAM FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. MOST TIMES IT’S A NEW CHARACTER THAT HAS NEW INSIGHTS. A WAY TO SHOW MY KIDS THEY CAN GAIN DIFFERENT IDEAS BY INTERACTING WITH NEW PEOPLE. WITH ALL THIS XENOPHOBIC VIOLENCE IN SA – ITS NOT A BAD LESSON. EACH NEW ADVENTURE HAS YIP TRIP LEARNING WAYS OF IMPROVING HIS ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY. THERE ARE 2 ROTTERS IN GREBNEZIUM AND THEY TRY AND UNSETTLE YOUNG MR TRIP AND HIS OVERSEAS GUESTS. HOWEVER YIP TRIP IS ALWAYS HELPING THEM AS WELL, EVEN THOUGH THEY TRY MESS UP HIS PLANS. I WANT TO USE MY YIP TRIP SERIES TO SHOWCASE NEW DESIGNS. FROM FURNITURE TO NEW HOUSING CONCEPTS TO FUTURE STADIUMS AND OFFICE BLOCK BUILDINGS. NEW CONCEPTS FOR FUTURISTIC CARS AND MODES OF TRANSPORT. ITS SOMETIMES POINTLESS PUTTING NEW IDEAS IN FRONT OF HARDWIRED ADULTS BUT CHILDREN CAN ALWAYS SEE THE IMAGINED POT ENTAIL OF ANY CONCEPT. other than spending time with my family I passionately enjoy collecting old books. The books i collect are mostly found in second hand bookshops. I can spend hours driving from Muizenberg to Kalkbay to Observatory to Cape Town to look for old books. Mainly on architecture however strange subjects suddenly interest me and will jump out the shelf all dusty and well scrutinised. in my collection i have an autographed copy of R. Buckminster Fuller's - 9 chains to the moon which i really enjoy. i have also been very fortunate to inherit my grandfathers architectural books, Mello G Damstra, dating back to 1896. Mello was the son of an architect, who inturn also became an architect. he started as a journeyman draughtsman in 1890 and travelled the world gaining valuable experience, eventually to settle in Cape Town. A few of his unuasully designed homes are found in Stellenbosch, Muizenberg and Upper Orange street in Cape Town. My grandmother Sally Niland was an English teacher and also had an extensive collection of poetry and english literature books. incidentally unbeknown to me she also loved looking for old books. my mom tells me they would drop her off at the old bookshops on a Saturday morning in the thirties and her treat was to peruse the old bookshops. like me in my field she collected books on all the greats. Their is something about finding an old well read book - the main points underlined by someone else and the pages a little worse for wear. The empire bookshop in Muizenberg is a great stop and i have been introduced to many new architects and designers in this little bookshop. i am very excited about a book i stumbled on called, design for the real world by Victor Papanek. his ideals match my own in many respects and as I'm delving further into the book I'm amazed at his insights. the book was first published in the early seventies and from a design perspective, even for our day, has very advanced ideas. i have also started collecting old music scripts which you find at these shops from time to time. i enjoy looking at the many hieroglyphics and hoping one day to understand the language which looks fascinating. over the last few years i have also started collecting a huge array of drawing equipment. rulers and t-squares mainly, again each ruler has the battle scars of many a draughted design. and as my office space gets smaller and i get pushed further out the door I'm really enjoying cluttering my space with these interesting, inexpensive things.
Disintegration of perspective. as considered by QJD design studio The next study is the concept of buildings that are viewed from one main vantage point and appear to be a complete shell. however if you approach this building from any other direction the building disintegrates. Incidentally the colours on my sketches bear no resemblance to the colours shown when i upload the image to blogger - (the green is yellow.) when looking at the green (should be yellow) cladded elevation front on - you will see the building as a shell. there are sculptures playing with this concept in shadow and in 3 dimension. I feel many buildings designed by the ancients incorporate this concept. whether its faces that subliminally jump out of the fenestration or shapes that appear from afar. I am very excited by this concept and will continue to explore its many possibilities.
I became familiar with this concept when i had the huge privilege of working as a sculpture's mould maker. When working with a sculpture that can actually accomplish a frozen moment in time, you are completely humbled by this artistry this sublime ability. It was at this point i came across this next concept - not a new concept - but new for me. the concept when applied to Architectural design creates an array of dynamic possibilities. when standing next to a sculpture that appears to be a moment frozen in time, a perceived energy awaiting the magicians wand is evident. an energy to release the frozen sculpture and allow it to go on its way. An accomplished sculpture is able to achieve this perceived kinetic energy. In the unfolding office block the perceived potentail energy is the fact that the building appears to be pulled open by the life size sculpture of a man in front. The idea hinges on the idea that one mans efforts can achieve the impossible. The life size sculpture is that of a man the calibre of President Nelson Mandela. The idea is that one man can make a difference - teamwork (the office workers) enforce the change. the wave house is another sketch in the perceived kinetic architecture series. creating a sense of movement in the static, fluidity, a moment frozen in time. I will continue to explore this concept and hopefully through time and suggestions improve the concept into a dynamic possibility.
My Madusa virus chair is another example of perceived kinetic energy -(see blog - erxells furniture launch)
