FaviconDeath Race 2008 18 Sep 2008, 6:03 am

Death race is one unbelievable, phenomenal, butt-kicking racing movie. The movie is filled with solid action right from the first scene and keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I should admit the movie is miles away better from what I expected.

Deadly crashes, colourful explosions, gory scenes, pretty women, great driving skills, cool maneuvering, witty and fun remarks all make up for most of the scenes.

The plot is fast-paced, full of thrills, spills and kills. Every detail is well thought off and the special effects is just amazing. Every action scene is intense and gets the adrenaline pumping all the way. There is never a dull moment, every part just whizzed to another in this high-thrilled, action-packed movie.

The race itself is perilous, brutal, deadly and dangerous, with racing cars heavily armored with weapons. The tracks are rigged with tricks and hurdles, whose main purpose is to cause obstructions and hurdles, making the race even more chellenging. The sight of the bloody scenes and wrangled bodies are extremely gruesome and gory. Would not advice the faint-hearted to watch.

My family had lots of fun watching it. We awed at the crashes and explosions, we booed at the mindless and ignorant villainous characters, we admired the driving and navigating skills. My boys seemed to have their eyes stuck to the ladies, though. By the end of the movie, we were relieved the excitement was over, but found ourselves wanting more.

I would not be surprised if the kids wanted to watch it again. Simply awesome. Watch it.

Here is s sneak summary of the action.

Casts :

Jason Statham as Jensen Ames / Frankenstein
Tyrese Gibson as "Machine Gun Joe" Joseph Mason
Joan Allen as Hennessey
Ian McShane as Coach
Natalie Martinez as Elizabeth Jayne Case

The movie started by showing a race between Frankenstein (who wears a mask everytime he races) and Machine Gun Joe in a reality TV series hosted by a private prison corporations, which aimed at reaping profits from the race. The racers were actually prisoners, offered with two choices. Win and gain freedom, or die chasing it. In this race, Frankenstein, accompanied by his navigator, the beautiful Elizabeth, encountered that his navigation systems had failed. Machine Gun Joe crashed into him, apparently killing him instantly.

Next scene saw Jensen Ames, framed for his wife murder and put into the Terminal Island Prison. There, he was persuaded by the sadistic prison warden, Hennessey to become the face behind the mask of Frankenstein. Though the racers had to win five Death Races, Jensen just got to win one last race, in the mask of Frankenstein to obtain freedom. Deeply encouraged by the thoughts of being with his baby daughter, Jensen obliged.

The races was spread over three races in the course of three days. Jensen's pit crew consisted of Coach, Lists and Gunner and also Elizabeth, his navigator. Before the race, Jensen noticed Pachenko, a driver, making the same finger gun gesture similar to the intruder who killed his wife. In Stage one, three drivers were killed, Siad, Grimm, and Travis Colt.

During the night, Jensen confronted Pachenko in the garage, almost getting killed if not interrupted by his crew member.

In Race 2, Jensen questioned Elizabeth involvement in the death of the last Frankenstein. She admitted tampering to Frankenstein's weapons systems just to obtain her freedom, at Hennessy's order. In this race, he pursued Panchenko's car relentlessly, causing the car to turn over. Pachenko came out of his wrecked car and Jensen took this opportunity to take revenge, snapping Pachenko's neck.

Three drivers were killed, 14K, Carson, and Riggins by Hennessy's Dreadnought, an enormous truck armed with machine guns. Together with Machine Gun Joe, Jensen managed to subdued the killer machine, thus incurring Hennessy's wrath. She had a bomb planted on Jensen's car that night.

In Stage 3, only two drivers were left, Machine Gun Joe and Jensen. Hennessy made life difficult for Jensen by rigging the track in favour of Machine Gun Joe. Jensen managed to stay up front. When Machine Gun Joe, from behind fired his missile in Jensen's direction, the target missed the car and hit at the billboard ahead instead.

Both of the racers then sped away to a bridge beyond, triggering an alarm. They were then pursued by police cars and helicopters where Jensen successfully thwarted by releasing his fuel tank, causing an explosion.

With Machine Gun Joe having successfully shaken the police, Case volunteered herself to take the wheel and asked Jensen to escape. Hennessy had signed her release papers and had no choice but to release her. Jensen left the car undetected, and fled the area in a running train with Machine Gun Joe.

Back in the prison, Hennessy was smiling to herself, thinking she had won. Unsuspectingly, she opened a package, claimed to be a gift from viewers, and it exploded, killing her. Apparently, Coach had found Hennessy's bomb in the car and had it packed up nicely to her.

Six months later, we saw Machine Gun Joe and Jensen working in a garage, making an honest living. Elizabeth arrived and was seen craddling Jensen's daughter.

FaviconBabylon A.D. 16 Sep 2008, 2:37 am

Ok, Vin Diesel is not really my favourite Hollywood actor, but since there is nothing else to watch, I chose 'Babylon A.D.'. Together with hubby and two of my kids, we explored the adventure of this sci-fi world. The plot is a bit confusing and hard to understand. Many a times the movie was replayed a few scenes back in order for us to capture the essence of the plot.

Babylon A.D. is a science fiction film based on the book, 'Babylon Babies', written by French writer Maurice G. Dantec'. The movie stars Vin Diesel as the main character 'Toorop', Michelle Yeoh as Sister Rebecca and Melanie Thierry as Aurora. In short, this sci-fi movie is about an exiled American, tasked of protecting and bringing Sister Rebecca and Aurora (a girl who is carrying a deadly virus) to America.

Seriously, I wonder why the movie is getting bad reviews from the critics. For me, I find it highly entertaining and hugely applauding. The special effects were amazing and mind-blowing, keeping the viewers fixated to the TV throughout. Van Diesel is not really a good actor in the emotional side, but he did pretty good for this movie. There is a special aura about him, something which is unique, but I have yet to grasp what it is. I guess his heroic abilities leave something to be desired.

There is nothing to judge from Michelle Yeoh's acting. She is a splendid, superb and talented actress. A very good reason why she is among the few Asians making it to the Hollywood movie scene. She maintained the same high standard of professional acting from her role in the Mummy 3 - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor to this movie.

The world of science fiction has always been one of my favorite movies genres. I find them intriguing, fascinating and brilliant, opening our mind and imagination of things beyond our horizon.

Review done, here is my summary of the movie:-

The scene started in Serbia, when Toorop, (Vin Diesel), in his apartment, was ambushed by the Swat Team and brought to a Russian Mafia boss, Gorsky. Toorop was given a special assignment, to bring two women, Sister Rebecca and Aurora across the border to be smuggled into New York. Little did he know that Aurora was carrying a deadly virus in within her. All this while, she had been hidden in a covenant under the protection of Sister Rebecca.

Their journey was not without problems. After barely escaping a spectacular train explosion, they had to tackle Aurora's pursuers in a night club. Here, we can see some fantastic fightings and manual combat taking place. With help from Finn, Toorop's friend, they got their hands on some snowmobiles and head to cross the Berring Strait. Through some skillful maneuvering, Toorop managed to shake off a pursuing jet.

Finally, they reached New York, or I should say futuristic New York with very high skyscrapers and more than normal colorful billboards. Toorop was supposed to hand over Aurora to Neolite Priestess, but the plan was abandoned when Aurora's identity and purpose was revealed to Toorop.

The defiance came with a price though, with Sister Rebecca being killed in a breath-taking scene of gun fire exchange. In an attempt to save Aurora, Toorop was also killed. Later, through Toorop memories', it was found out that a missile that hit Aurora did not even scratch her, and she fleed without a trace.

Another twist of events saw Toorop being brought back to life by Dr Arthur Darquandier, claiming to be Aurora's adopted father. Apparently, Aurora was a project by both he and Princess Neolite started a long time ago. She had given him a fotus, which he had genetically modified. However, he had come to love the girl, tore her away from Princess Neolite and brought Aurora under the care of Sister Rebecca.

Toorop obliged and with Dr Arthur's special team, they tracked Aurora. In the meanwhile, unable to squeeze the whereabouts of Aurora from Dr Arthur, Princess Neolite had him killed.

Toorop and company found Aurora in a rundown shack. They were then pursued by Princess Neolite's group but managed to shake them off. Next scene saw Toorop in a hospital, with a pregnant Aurora lying on the bed. She had been pregnant with twins all the while and requested Troop to be their father and take care of them. Not sure if Aurora died after that, but the closing scene saw two little girls being led away into a cottage house by Toorop.

Phew! What a lengthy summary. My advise to potential viewers to this movie : Please be patient in understanding the plot, quite a task to follow. But the actions, special effects, weaponry, and acting were amazing.

FaviconBangkok Dangerous 13 Sep 2008, 2:09 am

Bangkok Dangerous was an original Thai movie in 1999, directed by the famous Pang Brothers. And now, the same directors, decided to remake the movie, lest for one difference. Bringing Nicholas Cage as the star character.

When I first heard about Nicholas Cage acting in the movie, I was ecstatic. Another Nicholas Cage movie! It must be good! Nicholas Cage is one of my top three favourite Holly wood actors. The other two are Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. (Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Ben Affleck are also among the fav). His last movie I watched was NEXT, that was pretty good.

For Bangkok Dangerous, I think it should be listed as one of his bad movies of all time. To be frank, it was lame, just pure lame. Got nothing to bad to say about Bangkok, cause it is a beautiful city, with beautiful people.

It was just that the plot was too simple and predictable. There were no suspense, thrill or excitement. The lines or script were cheesy and unconvincing. No small witty, funny jokes or smart remarks that usually spice up this type of action movies. Bangkok Dangerous was just a plain boring, with scenes mostly shot at night.

The only highlight was the part when Nicholas Cage pursued his victim (who was on a boat), relentlessly with a bike next to it. He landed spectacularly on the boat, cut his victim's hand with a saw and put a bullet in the head. For me, that is the only decent action scene that held me on the edge of my seat. The rest was worth sleeping for.

Another lame detail was the inclusion of a romance scene. Very weak attempt at bringing diversity to the plot. The relationship of Nicholas and his lady was boring and irrelevant, well, at least for me. If, for any reasons , the director has a motive for the romance scene, I could not the least detect it.

The plot goes like this:-

A Bangkok mob boss hired a hitman, Joe (Nicholas Cage), and gave him four killing assignments. Joe arrived at his new house in Bangkok and hired a pickpocket, Kong to be his assistant. Kong was to be his messenger between himself and the mob group. Before long, Kong became romantically involved with a dancer he was exchanging information with.

Joe was supposed to be a loner in this job of his. Do the assigments, get paid, cover the tracks and flee. No emotional feelings or attachments whatsoever are to be hung on. However, this time, he met a beautiful deaf-mute girl in a pharmacy and was attracted to her. He also broken his rule, when he mentored Kong.

His relationship with the mute lady went well, till she saw him killing two men who tried to attack Joe. In shock and disbelievement, she ran away.

Joe's first two assignments went without a glitch, but the third was a tough nut, though successful. On the fourth one, Joe demanded more money. The mob boss decided it was time for a clean-up and sent his men to kidnap Kong and his lover to squeeze the location of Joe's residence.

In the meanwhile, on seeing that his fourth victim was well loved by the public, in an ongoing procession, Joe aborted his assassination plan. However, he was detected by the government snipers and was pursued. Joe managed to get back to his house, but only to find intruders trying to ambush him. He took them out with explosives, blasting the whole house.

With the information of the mob's headquarters from one of the nearly dead attackers, Joe decided to rescue Kong, bringing with him his 'informant'. But not before saying his last farewell to his mute lady girlfriend.

On reaching the headquarters, Joe found himself engaging in a fierce gunfire battle. Numerous gang members were taken out one by one. Until at last, Joe managed to find Kong, with his lover in a room and ordered them to escape.

Joe spotted the fearful gang leader, and his accomplices trying to flee away in a car. Joe shot the accomplices and got into the rear of the car, seating himself beside the gang leader. He used the last of his last bullet to shoot himself in the head, killing the gang leader beside him as well.

Well, that is about the last of it, Cage is dead in the end. Not really my favourite movie endings. For any of you who want to catch the movie, my advise is, save the money for the cinema tickets and wait for the dvd rental instead.

FaviconThe Attic 6 Sep 2008, 1:38 am

The Attic is a horror thriller released early January 2008 but I only managed to watch it a few days ago. From the setting, plot and casts, it can easily be detected that it is a low budget film.

The main story revolves around a teenage girl. A girl who slowly went crazy after seeing her own reflection in the attic's mirror.

Judging by the overall plot and storyline, the Attic is quite unimpressive. Nothing too horrifying that would make me jump out of my skin. Not much horrifying ghostly appearances, no frightening hair-raising screams and even the special effects is mediocre.

All I can see is the girl, walking suspiciously around the house, fainting there and here, and making the people around her worried sick.

The scene started with Emma (the girl) and her parents (Kim and Graham Callan) with the brother (Frankie Callan), moving into their new house. At first sight, she felt incomprehension towards the house, especially the attic. Nevertheless, she explored it and was attacked by someone who looked exactly like her.

Convinced she was being haunted, Emma refused to leave the house until she managed to find out what was disturbing her. With the help of a detective, John Trevor, Emma found out that her parents had been practicing black magic and keeping skeletons in the closet.

Further investigations revealed that she had a twin sister, Beth, who died after 12 days she was born. Emma believed the spirit she had been seeing was Beth returning to life. Later, she witnessed Beth killing her brother, Frankie.

Later, Beth tried to strangle Emma and Trevor came to her rescue. Trevor gave her a gun to protect herself.

Confused and dazed, she shot both of her parents and called the police. When the police arrived, Emma threatened "John Trevor", who claimed to be a paramedic and not a detective. When she tried to shoot him, she was actually shooting her own self.

Emma's family friend and also her psychiatrist, Dr Perry, told the police that Beth and Trevor were just a figment of her imagination and not real. She had been imagining and hallucinating these two characters all this while. An dangerous obsession which cost the whole family.

Incidentally, a family before Emma's was also killed in the house. The movie ended with the scene of another family with a teenage daughter moving in.

That would be another but the same storyline and I am certainly not watching it again. Once is more than enough. The Attic is just another horror movie which is not the least horrifying.

FaviconThe Love Guru 2008 2 Sep 2008, 1:34 am

It took my children about 2 weeks to coax me into watching this movie. Comedy is never my favourite in the movie genre, preferring the adventure thrillers instead. Nevertheless, seeing how much they wanted to watch the movie, I relented.

As I read somewhere on the web, the movie is directed by Marco Schnabel. It's casts features some of the more famous faces of Hollywood;

Mike Myers as the hilarious Guru Pitka
Jessica Alba as the sweet Jane Bullard

Romany Malco as Darren Roanoke hockey player in stress
Meagon Good as Prudence Roanoke, Darren's wife
Verne Troyer as Coach Cherkov
Justin Timerlake as Jacques "Le Coq" Grandé

The plot revolves around Guru Pritka who was approached by Jane Bullard, a representative of Maple Leaf (hockey team) to give inspiration to it's star player, Darren. Apparently, Darren has fallen out with his wife, and his performance in the ring was greatly affected. He became more stressed when found out his wife was living with another man, Jacques.

Together with his assistant, Guru Pitka managed to get the two together and the Maple Leaf season was saved, winning the championship.

The movie started out slow, very, very slow that I have to hold with bated breath waiting to laugh at the next funny joke. And when it came, I did not catch or understand what is it that is supposed to be funny.

There were, of course, moments of funny scenes and witty comments throughout the movie, but they were few and apart. Before long, the family were bored to tears. Even some of the kids snored themselves to sleep for the good second part of the movie.

Please do not blame for the very brief summary of the movie. The truth is, I am hesitant to go through the ordeal of recalling and narrating the plot. This movie is not up to the expectations of many. The promotions, advertising and all the hype and vibe that went on prior to the preview was bigger than the actual movie itself. In short, the movie does not justify the promotions campaign.

Mike Myers is a good actor, very talented and funny. Really enjoyed his other movies, like Austin Powers and especially Shrek. I guess the overall story plot and scripts have to bear most of the blame for the weak reviews the movie is getting.

Jessica Alba is, as usual, charming and alluring, with her beautiful smile lighting up the screen every time she is on. Her gentle yet, firm character, is what makes me wanting to watch every movie she makes (Fantastic Four is my favourite).

To be honest, it is the appearance and performance of these two casts that makes the movie spicier. The rest, was under graded. For Justin Timberlake, I am not judging him cause he is a singer by nature. However, I would just would like to highlight that he will be better off sticking to singing rather than acting.

My rating is 5/10.

FaviconRambo 2008 31 Aug 2008, 2:12 am

It has been 20 years since the first Rambo movie, First Blood was screened. I was still very small, like around aged 12. The movie was such a big hit around the world. The blockbuster became a family movie favourite and I remember that my mine watched it several times, especially my dad.

And now, 20 years on, and after 3 fine instalments, John Rambo came back to relived his past and ended his war fighting career. It will be probably the last Rambo movie ever made and I am honoured that the kids have the chance to watch this Rambo legacy. Throughout the movie, I had such a busy time explaining to the kids the history of Rambo, his heroic acts, narrating the previous Rambo movies, etc. The kids, magneted by Rambo personality, listened intently to every word I said, but with eyes fixated on the TV all the while.

The plot was simple. Rambo was sent to the enemy front in an order to extract prisoners. But is is the Rambo character, who never failed to impress me. His piercing stare and deep husky voice are mesmerising. (Of course, he is not as young as he used to be) Not to mention the bravery, determination, extreme courage and his vast expertise of military gadgets, weaponry and strategy.

I really respect Sylvester Stallone. He has been around in Hollywood for a long time and definitely deserves the recognition and fame. His other blockbuster movie are 'Rocky Balboa', where he starred as a boxer.
Now, back to 'Rambo'. Here are the casts :
Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo
Julie Benz as Sarah Miller
Matthew Marsden as School Boy
Graham McTavish as Lewis

Rey Gallegos as Diaz
Jake La Botz as Reese
Tim Kang as En-Joo
Maung Maung Khin as Tint
Paul Schulze as Michael Burnett

John Rambo lived in Thailand, along the Burmese border. He worked as a boatman, capturing snakes and selling them. A humanitarian group, led by Michael Burnett (Paul Schulze), requested John to transport them to Burma, where they aimed at helping the civilians. Only after Sarah Miller (Julie Benz), Michale's wife, convinced John, he accepted hesitantly.

During the journey, they were intercepted by pirates, whom John had to kill to save Sarah. Hot happy with the killings, Michael did not want Rambo's help for the return trip.

Unfortunately, the village they were rendering help for, was attacked by the Burmese army. Rambo was once again requested to take hired merceneries to where the he had left the missionaries. Together, they infiltrated the Burmese army camp and extracted the captives but were split into two groups. Rambo, Sarah and the sniper, Schoolboy in one group and the others in another group.

Before long, the Burmese army launched a full-scale tracking on them. The others were finally captured. Rambo, then, hijacked a machine gun, mounted on a truck and fired on the army relentlessly. His fight was joined by the now-free hired merceneries and a group of Burmese rebels. The army war defeated and their leader killed by Rambo.

Rambo decided to return to the United States, in seach of a life of peace, with no war. And the closing scene, depicted John walking a highway towards his home.

Truly touching, and for me, has great sentimental value cause this will be the last time we will see Rambo in action. Sniff... sniff...

FaviconShutter 2008 29 Aug 2008, 8:19 pm

Firstly, I would like to say that I was literally 'forced' to watch this movie. Terribly down with fever, coupled by stumbling on the movie's low rating reviews, I was hesitant to watch it initially. The kids just managed to persuade me. After many yawnings and sighings, and frequent trips to the toiliet, the ordeal of having to watch it thankfully ended.

Ok, here is the review from me. Shutter is just another boring, typical horror movie that is plaguing the movie world for quite some time now. It is a remake of the 2004 Thai film, which was also in the same name. I really wonder why directors attempted to remake movies that is already proven to be unpopular. Even if it is to be done, make sure that the movie's plot, storyline and special effects will surpass its original movie.

Instead of that, we are treated to the same ghost story of a vengeful spirit taking vengeance on her murderers. Just another black-haired, very pale-faced, skinny ghost scaring the living daylights out of people. The same flashes of crawling, standing ghostly scenes, appearing out of nowhere in a weak attempt to horrify the viewers.

These scenes are just too familiar, considering the same format and special effects that most horror movies used, and I am not even a bit horrified or scared. To top it all, the script and acting was also lame and unimpressive.

Just for the sake of others, who have bot both seen the original Thai movie and this remake, this is a short summarisation. The scene is set in Tokyo. It started off by a young couple, Ben and his wife, Jane, having an accident. His wife claimed that she hit a mysterious pale-faced woman wearing a filmsy white dress. She soon later found fade images of this woman in their photograhs.

In the meantime, Ben experienced shoulder pains and the doctor could not find the reason why. Disturbed by ghostly visions, Jane and Ben consulted a physic, Murase. Upon hearing the physic's remarks, Ben refused to interpret to Jane, claimed that he was a fake and left in a hurry.

Unconvinced, through the photographs, Jane went to an office, where she saw a picture of the ghost and her husband. When confronted, Ben admitted that he had a relationship with this girl, Megumi previously. When Megumi became possessive and obsessive with him, he dumped her. Jane wanted to find Megumi.

In Megumi's apartment, they were schocked to find her decomposed body. Apparently, Megumi had poisoned herself to death. Police were called in and funeral arrangements was arranged. In another twist of plot, both Ben's friends, Bruno and Adam were dead. Adam had his eyes torn out and Bruno committed suicide.

Later night night, Ben was attacked by Megumi's spirit. Only after Jane exclaiming that Ben did not love her, did Megumi stop. Thinking that the nightmare was all over, they left for New York. There, Jane found pictures of Adam and Bruno forcing themselves on Megumi while Ben took the pictures.

Angered, Jane left Ben. Ben was devastated, and hysterically started taking pictures around the apartment. On one image, he was horrified to see that Megumi was clinging on his shoulders, thus explaining the reason why he had felt the pain and heaviness all this while. He attempted to electrocute himself, failed and ended up in a mental hospital. The movie ended in a scene of Megumi still draping herself on Ben.

Typical, predictable, boring and not worth watching, that will be my rating for this movie. On a lighter note, I had a fun time goading the kids about the movie not being good at all. They ignored me totally when I said, "See, I told you all the movie was terrible."

The casts :
Joshua Jackson as Benjamin Shaw
Rachael Taylor as Jane Shaw
Megumi Okina as Megumi Tanaka
David Denman as Bruno
John Hensley as Adam

Favicon10 000 BC 2008 28 Aug 2008, 1:48 am

I just love these kind of epic movies. They are set in the time period we are definitely not familar with. Completely different in every possible ways. Their culture, food, dwelling, clothes, transportation and warfare are revealing to the eyes. Bet the language would also be different during those times. But of course, the movie is shot in English, or we will never be able to understand the story.

Basically, the plot revolves around a love relationship between a young man, D'leh, and his childhood sweetheart, Evolet, a beauty with exceptional sparkling blue eyes. In order to win her hand in marriage, D'leh had to compete with the other young men of the tribe (the Yagahl), to kill a 'manak' (mammoth), in which he did. Upon considering that his father had left the tribe in shame a long time ago, D'leh gave her up.

It was not until Evolet and a few others were captured by horse riding raiders, did D'leh, with the assistance of close friends, vowed to get her back. Along the journey, D'leh recued a sabre tooth tiger. To repay the gesture, the ancient tiger defended D'leh when a tribe of warriors confronted them.

Sensing D'leh's acquaintance with the white tiger is a sacred one, the tribe warriors believed that D'leh was the one who will lead them into battle against the raiding bandits. The tribe leader then revealed that he knew D' leh's father and told him that his father left the tribe not out of cowardice but to protect it's people instead. D'leh was motivated on hearing this, and agreed to lead the army. All the tribes gathered together in force and marched towards the enemy front.

Their destination took them to a vast desert where it is believed that the last survivors of Atlantis moved there when their continent sunk into the sea. The leader, is believed to be god-like with extra-terrestrial origins. He wanted to be regarded as a living God, and ordered the slaves to build a large pyramid to honour him.
D'leh and his company sneaked in and fierce battle ensued, trigging a violent rebel eruption amongst the slaves. Only after Evolet, then still in captivity, was revealed in public, did D'leh stopped the rioting party. The 'Almighty' (as he was called) struck a deal, Evolet will be released if D'leh conceded defeat.

D'leh pretended to agree, moved closer in range and killed the 'Almighty' with a spear. In the midst of another battle eruption, the raider who captured Evolet back in their tribe home, kidnapped her in a horse. D'leh pursed him, had a duel and Evolet was injured by the arrows the raider aimed at her. D'leh killed him in vengeance.

D'leh was devastated that Evolet was dead. Then, in another twist of events, the tribe's Mother Spirit, who had been protecting D'leh spiritually from afar, breathed her last breathe and Evolet suddenly awakened. Everything that happened next was bittersweet, the parting of new-found friends and the joy of reunion of loved pnes.

There are many aspects of this story. We can see how an orphaned boy, lived through insults and humiliation, to become a brave and fearsome warrior. Then, there are also the shows of loyalty, friendship and faith. The discovery and acceptance of new cultures and friends. Most of all, we were also treated to the power of love. Love that transcends all boundaries.

All in all, apart from loving the epic genre, I think the movie is good. Really like seeing the mammoth and sabre tooth tiger (both extinct now) in a world of humans. I can't help but wonder what would happened if those animals still exist today. Hmmm...

FaviconJumper 2008 25 Aug 2008, 8:15 am

Actually, I have watched this movie for about a month ago and only felt compelled to write the review today. The movie, I can say, is quite entertaining and enjoyable, riding us through the fiction world of teleportation.

Amusingly, the kids did not seemed to understand a thing about the plot. The only thing that made them glued at the TV was the fact that the character can so called 'jumped' from one place to another extraordinary location.

As for me, I have always admired the possibility of teleportation. Is it possible? What if it is? What would happen to the world if everybody teleports? The character 'Nightcrawler' in the X-Men movie, fascinates me ad he can teleports too.

Enough about my mind-wandering, silly thoughts. Back to the movie, The Jumper. It is a 2008 science fiction movie based on a person capable of teleporting to any location as he is chased by a secret group intent on killing him.

The casts :

Hayden Christensen as David Rice, the main character
Rachel Bilson as Millie Harris, David's childhood friend and girlfriend

Samuel L. Jackson as Roland Cox, the leader of the group intent on killing him
Jamie Bell as Griffin, another jumper who hunts down the Paladins and kill them

Michael Rooker as William Rice, David's estranged father
Diane Lane as Mary Rice, David's mother, who is a Paladin

Since it has been a month I last watched it, I will try my best to relate the story in brief summary. Actually a very short summarising cause the scenes are quite vague for me to recall. Basically this movie is about a man, who discovers that he possesses the exhilarating ability to instantly teleport anywhere in the world he can imagine.

From New York to Tokyo and from the ruins of Rome to the heart of the Saharan desert, anywhere is possible for David Rice. That is until he begins to see that his freedom is not total and that he's not alone. Instead, he is part of an ongoing, global war that threatens the very survival of his rare and extraordinary kind.

With his new-found friend, Griffin they tracked the Paladin down when they captured Millie. A fight ensued between the Paladins and David. In a scene where David just left Roland in the middle of nowhere, Roland realises that David is different from the rest of the jumpers he had even encountered. The story closes with David's brief and quick reunion with his mother.

All and all, as I have said earlier the movie is fascinating and an eye-opener to me only as the rest of my family members did not think so. Maybe a 7/10 from me and a 4/10 from them? Yeah, seems to be like that.

FaviconWanted 2008 22 Aug 2008, 1:14 am

Awesome! Action-packed! Fast-paced! What else? Oh... Entertaining and enjoyable! A balanced element of comedy, action, drama spiced up with a bit of sexy and 'adult only' scenes. It is so good that I have my eyes fixated on the TV for a good 90 minutes of the movie.

Angelina Jolie is beautiful and sensuous, at the same time deadly and seductive. This woman takes the breath of every man and drained them of their mind.

She is so damn gorgeous and so perfectly matched for the role. I heard that she does her own stunts, wow isn't she independent? Brad Pitt is a lucky guy.

Morgan Freeman, as usual has a predictable role. Usually exudes a calm, indifferent and disciplined character . as like in this movie. He is the boss of the so called 'Fraternity of Assassins'. He played the role pretty ok, a fatherly fugure turned into the bad guy in the end.

James McAvoy, well, he is cute and adorable. But somewhat geeky looking. Looks like a nerd to me. I guess the director just needs someone like him to carry the role. For me, assassins are not the role for him, yet. Still boyish looking and not threatening at all.

The story starts with a man, a top member of the Fraternity of assassins, getting himself shot in the head by Cross, allegedly an ex member who betrayed the fraternity. In the meanwhile, Wesley Gibson, an accountant is leading a wretched life, working under a fussy boss and knowing his best friend had an affair with his girlfriend.

Soon, in a pharmacy, Fox met Wesley, claiming that someone is trying to kill him, spotted Cross nearby and a thrilling car chase soon ensued. Fox outran the big truck that Cross was driving and brought Wes to the headquarters of the Fraternity. There, he met the boss, Sloan who revealed the man who tried to kill him was the same man who had killed his 'father', or so he claimed. Sloan coaxed Wesley to join them, but he declined immediately.

The next day, after discovering that a fortune had been left for him by his late 'father', plus that he was annoyed by his life, Wesley quitted and decided to join the Fraternity. After some very harsh trainings, Wesley was finally ready to take revenge.

But he had to wait. The Fraternity gets its' victims from the Loom of Fate. Which is a loom that gives the names of the targets through a binary code hidden in weaving errors of the fabric. Killing Cross just got to wait cause his name has not turned up yet.

Wesley was given assignments to complete. Through the assignments, the Fraternity can judge whether he was ready or not. When he excelled in the them, Sloan thought the time was ripe.

As Sloan directed, Fox and Wesley threatened Pekwarsky, a priest, to reveal the whereabouts of Cross and to hold a meeting. It took place in a train station. A fierce fight followed between Cross and Wesley in the running train while Fox, having missed it has to pursue by car.

She crashed it into the train, causing the train to derail when it reaches a bridge over a deep ravine. While Wesley was hanging precariously, Cross caught his hand. Grudgingly, Wesley shot him in the chest. Before Cross died, he revealed that he was Wesley's real father and that the Fraternity had lied to Wesley. The reason being that only Wesley can get near to Cross to kill him.

When confronted, Fox said that it was true and she had direct orders to kill Wesley too. Wesley escaped by shooting a glass pane underneath him and fell into the river below. When Wesley woke up, he was shocked to see himself in his father's apartment living just across from him. Petwarsky was there too. Wesley then knew that Cross, his real father had been monitoring him all his life.

Petwarsly also told Wesley that Cross had been trying to separate him from the Fraternity all this while and gave Wesley a piece of fabric. He decoded it and was surprised, that the code revealed Sloan's name. Using his father Exterminator's mini bombs, Wesley barged into the Fraternity headquarters, killing whoever he encountered.

When he entered Sloan's office, he found himself surrounded by the Fraternity elite members. Wesley revealed to them that Sloan had been manufacturing his own targets. When asked by Fox, Sloan admitted it was true and that actually all their names had come out in the weaving. Sloan gave them a choice. If they believed in the code, put the gun in their mouths and pull the trigger. If not, kill Wesley.

As one member was about to shoot Wesley, Fox sent a curve bullet that hit everyone standing in the circle and also herself. Wesley pursued Sloan but he escaped. The story closed by Wesley, like his father caught Sloan unaware by a bullet through his forehead.

Phew! Finally done. Hope you will enjoy watching it as much as I do.

FaviconThe Dark Knight 2008 21 Aug 2008, 3:38 am

So, here we go again. The latest version of Batman movie, The Dark Knight. And to match the title, most of the scenes are mostly shot during the night. Sensing a critical review coming from me? Very accurate. I am definitely not enjoying the movie as I thought I would. First of all, Christian Bale is not really my favourite Batman, prefers George Clooney instead. Secondly, it is not that Bale is not good, just that he is a bit too overwhelmed for the character.

And yet again, they changed the girl, just like Mummy 3. Kathy Holmes was replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal as the role of Rachel Dawes. But I have no comment for the girls, both carry the character well. As fo the movie and the plot itself, this Batman movie is a bit too long and draggy. Not to mention boring and monotomous. Except for the adrenaline opening bank robbery scene, and some flashes of butt kicking actions, the rest are worth going to the restroom for.

As usual, the plot goes like this. Joker, after killing his accomplices, fled away with the bank's money. During the night, Batman apprehends the mobster and the Scarecrow (who were having a meeting) and also 3 Batman imposters. As his suit was bitten by dogs, Batman had to design a new suit. In the meanwhile, new district attorney Harvey Dent who was involve in wiping out the mob, dated Wayne's friend, Rachel Dawes.
Bruce then offered to hold a fun raising event.

All the mob bosses in Gotham City held a meeting with their Chinese accountant, Dent, to discuss the Batman issue. The Joker suddenly intruded in, offered to kill Batman for half of their money. The bosses declined the offer. Only when they found out that Dent was brought by Batman to the police custody, did they agree to hire Joker. Joker, then publicised that every day the Batman did not reveal himself, a person will die.

When a judge and a commissioner were found dead, Bruce decided t to reveal himself. Before he can, Dent came forward and claimed that he was Batman just to get the Joker out of hiding. As expected, Joker tried to capture Dent but was caught himself.

Batman interrogates the Joker at the police station. Joker revealed that Dent and Dawes were captured by corrupt officers, put into two separate buildings armed with bombs. Batman managed to rescue Dent, but not without injuries as half of his face got burnt. Gordon was not in time to save Rachel and she died in the explosion.

In the hospital, the Joker released and persuaded Dent to take revenge on the corrupt officers, Batman and Gordon for the death of Rachel. Dent, then become the famous 'Two-faced villain, who decides the fate of his victims by flipping a coin.

In the meanwhile, Joker threatened the public that anyone left in Gotham at nightfall will be subject to his rule.
The authorities then began evacuating people by ferry as all tunnels and bridges had been shut out, unaware that the ferries carrying convicts on one and civilians on the other, were planted with explosives. Joker announced that the only way to save themselves is to activate the bomb trigger of the other ferry, or he will destroy both ferries by midnight.

The ferry passengers decided not to pull the trigger and destroy each other. Batman succeeded in stopping the Joker, defeating him. Joker then revealed the madness that Dent was unleashing to the City. With Joker safely being arrested, Batman pursued Dent. He found him holding Gordon and his family captives, in the ruins of the building where Rachel died.

In the midst of the fight, both Batman and Dent fell over a building. In order to preserve the reputation of the City, Batman requested from Gordon that he be held responsible for the murders. Gordon reluctantly agreed and destroyed the Bat-signal. Batman is now the hunted man.

I guess from the way that the movie ends, they will be another movie from Christian Bale. Just hope that it will not be as draggy as this one.

FaviconThe Scorpion King : Rise of a Warrior 19 Aug 2008, 6:39 am

Hmmm... How can I rate this movie? Say... 6 out of 10, would be it. Not that the movie or the plot is not good, but the casts playing the character were just a bit lame. Firstly. the hero, Mathayus, played by Michael Copon, is not exuding a warrior-like aura of what a fighter really is. His facial expressions and body language seems amaterish. I wonder how did he ever get the role.

Then, comes the women. Mathayus, girl, Layla, played by Karen David looked too young for the role. And her acting is also not convincing enough. Lady Astarte, played by Natalie Becker, is way off, of being a seductress. Maybe, Angelina Jolie might give her a lesson or two on seduction. The two women just lacked the extra ummmph that women in movies should.

Well, anyway, that is just my opinion. Others may see it in a different angle though.

As usual, some of the details of the movie, the summary, the casts. movie trailer and other links to 'Scorpion King : Rise of a Warrior'.

It is a prequel to the 2002 film, the Scorpion King, which stars 'The Rock.' In brief, the story started with Mathayus witnessing his father's death and vowed revenge on his murderer.

The story started with a young Mathyus, against his father's (Ashur) wishes, joining the sacred Black Scorpions. In a training, Mathayus argued with his friend. Their argument was heard by, Sargon, the commander of the Army. As Sargon were about to punish them, Ashur arrived and both adults engaged in a duel. Since, the Emperor, Hammurabi, owed Ashur a pardon, both father and son were released unpunished and this made Sargon angry. As such, he used the Black Scorpion to murder Ashur during the night. Full of vengeance, Mathayus decided the only way to take revenge is to join the Black Scorpions.

Years passed and Mathayus had been promoted to the rank of master swordsman. During a ceremony, the Emperor, now was Sargon as he had murdered the previous Emperor, recognised Mathayus and invited him to the palace. Sargon demanded for Mathayus' loyalty, Mathayus obliged. However, the next day, this loyalty was questioned when Mathayus was ordered to punish his own brother, Noa, who allegedly had spread rumours about the Emperor. Both of them escaped, but Noa was killed by a magic arrow.

Mathayus then escaped Egypt with a boat, encountered Layla and made alliance with Aristotle, a Greek scholar. Aristotle revealed that the only way to kill Sargon was to get a sword from the underworld. But first, they had to kill a minotaur who guarded the portal to the underworld.

With the help of prisoners, (one of them is Fong), who were kept there, the minotaur was killed. Using Aristotle intelligence in deciphering the puzzle, they succeeded in entering the portal. A vast desert welcomed them and it soon became a swamp full of dead corpses, traps, and fully awakened bodies. They managed to enter the palace of The Lady, acquired the sword and came back to the portal, just in time, avoiding the curse of turning into stone.

When they went back to Akkad, Sargon were in the midst of sacrificing his people in a mass burning ceremony. Layla and Fong duelled with the guards and managed to stop the fire spreading. In the meanwhile, in a fight between Sargon Mathayus, Sargon turned himself into a gigantic scorpion. With much effort and difficulty, Sargon was slained.

Hammurabi's son was declared the new Emperor. Even though Mathayus loved Layla, he decided that the life of adventures was still the best for him.

Talking about Sargon being the gigantic black scorpion, the special effect was lame. The scorpion was not frightening and intimidating enough. Actually, we could not even see the big scorpion, as it appeared as flashes of some black legged insect in semi transparent mode. I do not know what elsee to ay about this movie. Just not as good as the Mummy.

FaviconHancock 18 Aug 2008, 7:27 am

God bless, my neighbours. There are the ones who are kind enough the Hancock DVD. This is just my type fo movies, and there are no words to describe how much I enjoyed watching it.

Original, unique, entertaining, Hancock provides me with everything I want in the movie. The character gives a completely fresh breath of air in the world of 'superheroes'. Thumbs up to Hancock, the best movie for me since Transformers.

As usual, just a bit about the movie.
Hancock is a 2008 superhero film. It is directed by Peter Berg and starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman, and Charlize Theron. It is the story of a reckless and selfish superhero whose heroics actions are not appreciated by the citizens of Los Angeles. Fortunately, a kind soul, Ray Embrey, makes it a personal mission to make Hancock turn over a new leaf, so that people will love him.

The casts
Will Smith as John Hancock
Jason Bateman as Ray Embrey
Charlize Theron as Mary Embrey
Eddie Marson as Red Parker

So, the story goes like this. John Hancock is an unemployed alcoholic who has superhuman powers and immortality. Even though, he used his powers to fight the crimes in the City of Los Angeles, his actions often resulted in millions of dollars of property damages.

Through all the negative media coverage about him, the public are tired of his selfish and ignorant acts. He had also avoided lawsuits against him.
When Hancock rescues Ray from being hit by a train, Ray pitied John for all the negative publicity that he got. And so, Ray decides to improve Hancock's public image, and Hancock unwillingly accepts. He was brought to prison to begin his character rehabilitation. Slowly, Hancock's temper and attitude begins to change.

While hancock is in prison, the crime rate in Los Angeles increases rapidly. The Chief of Police contacted Hancock for assistance in the caso of the bank robbery. Hancock comes into the rescue with a new clean image and a new suit.

Hancock proceeded in rescuing a police officer and stopping the robbery. With this new heroic image and effort, Hancock was applauded by the public.

After the rescue, ray invited Hancock to a dinner with his wife, Mary. After dinner, while ray was drunk asleep, Mary revealed to Hancock that he is an immortal who has suffered from amnesia 80 years ago. The shock is that, Mary is also like him, an immortal with superpowers and had lived on Earth for 3000 years.

Irritated that Mary is not telling the whole truth, the two of them engaged in a tussle in the City of Los Angelos, causing chaos and destructions. Incidently, Ray stumbled upon seeing his wife using the same superhuman powers as Hancock.

In a liquor store, Hancock was shot in the torso and was rushed to the nearest hospital. Mary visited him and explained that the two of them cannot be in close contact with each other, or they will lose their powers and become mortal. Emotionally, she explained, that she had to leave Hancock after the amnesia incident to let him recover fully.

In the midst of their conversation, they were raided by the bank robber from the previous encounter and his two other accomplices. Mary is shot, trying to save Hancock. Although Hancock is able to stop them, he is badly wounded. The robber was about to shoot Hancock, when Ray intervenes and cut his hand.

With the last of Hancock's strength, he flew out of the hopital, trying to get as far away from Mary. So that she is able to heal with her powers. One month later, Hancock took himself a career as a superhero, fighting crimes in the city of Los Angeles.

Phew! What an incredible story. I'd think I am going to watch it the second, or even the third time. The effects are amazing. Not to mention the cast. Will Smith is one of my favourite actors of all time. His last movie, 'I am Legend' is just as great. Charlize Theron, she is simply sexy and appealing. Can't wait for the next Will Smith movie.

FaviconThe Incredible Hulk 16 Aug 2008, 4:11 am

This version of Incredible Hulk is a bit better than the 2003 version as it is quite near to the comics and cartoon version. At the beginning, the kids complained on having to watch The Incredible Hulk because they prefered to watch kung Fu Panda instead. After some coaxing and promises they finally relented. As the plot unveiled itself and the Hulk revealing himself, the kids got excited and were glued to the TV then on.

The Incredible Hulk is a 2008 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character the Hulk released on June 13, 2008. In this movie, the plot continues from where it left off when Bruce Banner flees to evade the pursuit of General Ross while attempting to find a cure to rid himself from Hulk.

The casts:-
Edward Norton as Bruce Banner
Liv Tyler as Doctor Elizabeth Betty
Log Feriggno as the voic of Hulk
Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky
William Hurt as General Ross

The story starts when Banner left a trail in a bottle factory he worked for in Brazil. This trail prompted Ross to send a team, led by the Russian-born British special operations expert Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), to capture him. Banner escapes by becoming Hulk and Blonksy persuaded Ross to inject him with the Vita-ray serum, to make him as powerful as Hulk and seek revenge.

Banner returns to Culver University in the United States and was reunited with Betty, his girlfriend. There, he was attacked again with Ross' army, Banner had to be Hulk again and a battle ensued. Blonsky was injured terribly when Hulk threw him over a long distance. In the midst, when Betty was about to be hit by an exploding helicopter, the Hulk sheilded her and took the unconscious Betty away.

The next day, they went to see a long correspondent of Banner, a Doctor Samuel Sterns, who claimed to have the cure. After the procedure, they were quite sure that Banner was cured. As Banner was protesting about the large stocks of Banner's blood the Doc was keeping, they were
attacked by Ross' forces and Banner was taken into custody.

Blonsky then forces Stern to inject him with Hulk's blood. Despite warnings that he might turn into a monster, Blonksky still insisted. Thus, he mutated into a viscious monster. Banner, realizing that he was the only one who can stop the monster, convinced General Ross to release him.

He falls from Ross' helicopter as it hovers over the city, hoping the fall will trigger a transformation. Banner's plan succeeded. After a brutal battle, the Hulk defeated Blonsky by nearly strangling him to death with a huge chain, relenting his grip only after Betty's plea. The Hulk then flees the scene with the army in pursuit.

Very typical Hulk ending, where he flees to nowhere in hiding, leaving behind his beloved Betty.

As I have said, this movie, in terms of plot and graphic is a bit better than the last. I like the part when Hulk smashed the road and the cement cracked violently all the way to the monster. Another part is when he used his powerful hands to clap, releasing a powerful gush of wind. But the best part, is when he jumped from buildings to buildings swiftly in a breath taking ending scene.

However, in terms of cast, I think Eric Bana carried the character Hulk better than Edward Norton. He is tall, strong and has the aura of a brilliant scientist, a fugitive and the Hulk. Edward Norton comes as a bit subdued for me. Liv Tyler, who played Betty is exceptional, but there is no chemistry between her and Edward. Well, it is just my opinion anyway. But overall, the movie is very entertaining and is worth watching.

FaviconHellboy 2 - The Golden Army 16 Aug 2008, 3:35 am

This movie was enjoyed by the whole family. The smaller kids jumped everytime Hellboy whipped out his weapon for a fight. Making sure that the neighbours did not complain with all the noise and racket they were making, I had to threatened to stop the movie unless they settle down. I myself got excited towords the end when Hellboy challenged Prince Nuada to a fight. The only one not perturbed by the actions was my hubby, who did not seem to enjoy the movie.

Just a bit about the movie and it's plot. Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a 2008 film directed by Guillermo del Toro and is a sequel to the 2004 film Hellboy, which del Toro also directed. Ron Perlman reprises his role as the titular character. The film was commercially released on July 11, 2008 in the United States and Canada.

The story started in Christmas 1955, when a young Hellboy was told a story by his father about an ancient battle between humans and mythical creatures. Apparently, a Goblin had built a Golden Army for the King of Elves, Balor. However, the Golden Army destroyed the humans so terribly that King Balor decided to give up the power to command the Army.

He split the crown, which whoever wears it gets full control of the Army, into three pieces. He gave a piece to the humans, one to his daughter and one for himself. However, his son, Prince Nuada was not content with the arrangement, went into exile and vowed to return and gain power when the time is right.

At present, Nuada located the piece from the humans, killed his father for the second but his twin sister ran away with the third. In the meantime, Hellboy and his girlfriend, Liz, are having problems and Hellboy is also not happy that the BRPD organisation is to be kept secret and revealed himself to the world. Abe Sapien, their friend discovered that Liz is pregnant during the commotion.

Furious about the exposure Washinton sends a special agent, a being existing is a gaseous form in a suit, to babysit Hellboy. And so, the whole gang went to the troll market to locate the culprit who had bought the tooth fairies that had created havoc in the human world earlier on. There, Abe met Princess Nuala and fell in love with her. The BRPD took her under protection in their headquarters.

Unfortunately, her brother managed to locate her, but not before she hid the final piece in a book. Prince Nuada kidnapped his sister and wounded Hellboy with a spear shard. Unable to remove the spear shard, Johann, Liz, and Abe take Hellboy to the location of the Golden Army, hidden in Northern Ireland.

They encounter the Goblin that oversaw the creation of the Golden Army, and he brings them before the Angel of Death, who has been waiting for their arrival. Though told that Hellboy would doom humanity if he lives, and that she'll suffer the most from it, Liz pleads for Hellboy not to die. Amused by her choice, the Angel removes the spear shard from Hellboy's chest and tells Liz to give him a reason to live. She reveals to Hellboy that he's going to be a father.

The Goblin led the group to the location of the Golden Army. Abe gave the piece to Prince Nuala in exchange for his sister. The Prince put the pieces together and the Army was awakened once more. Seeing that they cannot defeat the Army, Hellboy challenged the Prince to a duel where the Prince was defeated. As he was about to stab Hellboy in the back, Princess Nuada stab herself in the heart, thus killing his brother at the same time because they are linked spiritually.

Abe was devastated by the Prinicess' death. At the end of the scene, Hellboy, Liz, Abe, and Johann all hand over their belts and resigned from the force.

My best part in the movie is when Hellboy and Abe got drunk and sang together. Abe confesses his love of the Princess to Hellboy, and hellboy in turns tell Abe how much he loved Liz. This tells us how much they are humans even though they are not. Their feelings and emotions are as real as us.

And Liz, big props to her and her love for sticking with Hellboy through thick and thin. Even to the extend of having his kids. She is not afraid of the discrimination she will soon faced. I must say that the movie is up to the expectations of many. For once, we did not see any demons or devils, but instead we are treated to the magical beings and creatures of the underworld.

The casts:
Hellboy - Ron Perlman
Liz Sherman - Selma Blair
Abe Sapien - Doug Jones
Prince Nuada - Luke Gross
Princess Nuala - Anna Walton
Johann Krauss - Seth MacFarlene

FaviconThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor 15 Aug 2008, 6:26 am

Recently, my whole family watched Brandon Frazier latest movie, The Mummy : Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It is the third instalment of Frazier's Mummy adventure thriller after 'The Mummy' and 'The Mummy Returns'. It was released on August 1, 2008 in the US.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is directed by Rob Cohen and written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Bob Ducsay, Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and James Jacks produce the film.

Some of the main casts were :
Brendan Fraser as Richard "Rick" O'Connell: A retired adventurer
Jet Li as Emperor Han: A warlord who desired immortality.
Maria Bello as Evelyn Carnahan-O'Connell: Rick's wife.
John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan: Evy's brother.
Isabella Leong as Lin: Zi Yuan's daughter and protector of the Dragon Emperor's Tomb.
Michelle Yeoh as Zi Yuan: An immortal whom Han sought out to receive the eternal life she possesses.

Th story starts with the legend of Emperor Han, the Dragon Emperor. He was a great emperor who has control of all the lands and instructed his slave to build him the Great wall of China. Also able to posses the skill of mastering the five elements. However, he became greedy and seek Zi Yuan who knows the secret of immortality.

Against his order, Zi Yuan and his general, General Ming, fell in love. So angered was he, he ordered the General to be pulled by horses. Zi Yuan was heartbroken and put a curse on the Emperor and his armies, turning them into terra cotta statues.

Next scene is in 1947, where Rick O'connel, retired from his adventures, stayed with his wife. His son at the moment, unknowingly to his parents, was on his quest to locate the Dragon Emperor's tomb. He succeeded in the mission, but not before he was atacked by a woman. Nevertheless, he avoided harm and successfully brought the Emperor back to Shanghai.

His parents was recruited by the British governement to take the Eye of Shangri-La back to China as a good faith gesture from the British to the Chinese. The O'Connels had a reunion at 'Imhotep' a a night club in Shanghai owned by Jonathan, Alex's uncle. There, Alex reveal the exhibit to his parents. Before long, the adventure starts, when his parents were held captive by Roger Wilson, who had funded Alex with the excavation of the Emperor project.

Also in the group is the Chinese military group led by General Yang and his Second-in-Command Choi.
They were successful in resurrecting the Emperor with the water of the Shangrila contained in the Eye of Shangrila itself.

The adventure continues, with the assistance of the woman, Lin, of whom had attacked Alex earlier in the tomb.
Lin revealed hesself to be the protector of the Emperor's tomb. They all went to pursue the Emperor to the Gate of Shangrila to stop the Emperor from resurrecting his armies.

With the help of her mother, the witch herself, Zi Yuan, the defenders went all out to protect the pool, in which if the Emperor steps into, he would change into whatever form he wished. Alas, they failed and the Emperor succeded in bringing back his armies. Seeing no other way out, Zi Yuan sacrificed her immortality and that of her daughter to revive those buried beneath the Great Wall. Led by General Ming, the undead army and the Terracotta army fight.

During a solo battle between Zi Yang and the Emperor, Zi Yang sacrificed herself and managed to retrieve the dagger, the only weapon that can kill the Emperor, from him. She gave the dagger to her daughter and died. O'Connels Senior and Junior then angaged themselves in a fight with the Emperor.

In the course of the fight, the dagger was split into two. Wittingly, Rick stabbed the Emperor in the front while Alex stabbed from behind, connecting the two broken pieces and thus the Emperor was killed with his heart destroyed in a brilliant explosion.

Such a great ending for a very entertaining movie. I have always been a fan of Brandon Frazier and never missed any of his movies. His smile, charm and physique holds a gripping watch. But above all, I think this kind of movie really suits him fine.

As expected, the Mummy 3 is full of fast-paced action, hilarious jokes and witty comments. Really like the uncle, Jonathan, whose mere presence send a tickle to our funny bone. Alex also potrays herself very well as the son of a famous 'Mummy Hunter'. But really missed his cutenessin movie 2.

I guess the only shortcoming in the movie is that the director decide to change the cast of the wife, Evelyn. The previous actress was so much prettier, smart and cute. Her accent and acting is more impressive than this current one.

There seems to be no chemistry between Rick and Evelyn in this third movie as compared to the first two. I really hope that they bring the original Evelyn back if there is a fourth instalment. In summatin, Mummy 3 is on par if not better than it's predecessor.

FaviconThe Tattooist 14 Aug 2008, 8:10 am

The tattooist

Just recently, I have rented 'The Tattooist' dvd and watched it with my family. Excited as we were, especially me because the movie is a my country's own production in collaboration with it's New Zealand counterpart.

The movie was directed by Peter Burger, who also directed 2 episodes of the comedy TV series, 'Rude Awakenings'. It was co-written by Matthew Grainger and Jonathan King.

When it was first released in the cinemas, the openings horror thriller looked great and promising, and I just cant wait it to be on dvd.

The story is about an American tattoo artist, Jake Sawyer, (played by Jason Behr) who traveled the world in search of discovering new tattoo designs. His travel brought him down to Singapore, where he met a beautiful Samoan lady, Sina, (played by Mia Blake) . At the same time, opening his eyes to the Samoan traditional method of tattooing, 'the tatau'.

When he deliberately stole a Samoan tattooing tool, got himself injured by it, he had unknowingly unleashed a deadly spirit, who was seeking justice for his wrongful murder. People, whom Jake tattooed, started to die mysteriously. And he soon discovered, the identity of the vengeful spirit, a young man, who was murdered by his tattooist, Sina's own uncle, Mr Va'a (David Fane).

Apparently, many years ago, Mr Va'a had performed the tattooing of the pea (really not sure of the spelling) on the young man, when his tattoos got infected. To avoid humiliation, Mr Va'a had murdered the young man and hid his body in the shed.

Knowing that Sina, the last person he had tattooed and with whom he had developed a romance with, was next, Jake went to the shed, only to be confronted by Mr Va'a. Ugly entanglements. soon ensued with Jake, Mr Va'a, his son Alipati (Robbie Magasiva) and the young man's father in the middle of it.

As expected, the murderer was exposed and defeated with the spirit now able to rest in peace.

I am not really sure of whether I had enjoyed the movie or not. My personal rating would be like 6/10. The movie was quite slow-paced and the kids got tired of it by the first 20 minutes. Plot-wise, it was unique and original. Casts were too few but good-looking.

Luckily, the setting was in New Zealand, which gave me the extra nudge to keep on watching. Except, for the part where the spirit can be seen feeding on and killing its' victims and the last 10 minutes of the movie, the rest was monotonous.

However, it was a good attempt at producing a local movie and I hope the local movie industry will keep on improving. A long way to go for a Hollywood blockbuster movie's standards, but hopefully we will get there, eventually.

Well, for those who are interested in watching and knowing more about the movie, click this link.

The casts :-

Jason Behr - Jake Sawyer
Timothy Balme - Jake's father
Michael Hurst -Crash
Nathaniel Lees - Mr Perenese
Mia Blake - Sina
Caroline Cheong - Victoria
Robbie Magasiva - Alipati

Horton

After watching this movie, I was so captivated by it's plot and the message that it conveys, I decided to post and review it. The kids also enjoyed watching it thoroughly. Funny, hilarious and meaningful, not to mention entertaining.

Watch the trailer below

Dr Seuss' Horton hears a Who

This movie is based on a story written by children's author, Dr Seuss. The main characters in the movie are the Elephant (Horton) beautifully carried by Jim Carrey, Mayor of Whoville played by Steve Carrol and Sour Kangaroo voiced by Carol Burnett.

It is the story of Horton the Elephant, who lives in the Jungle of Nool, hears a small speck of dust talking to him. He discovers that the speck of dust is actually the home to a city called "Whoville", populated by very tiny-sized people known as Whos. Although Horton can hear them very well, he can't see them.

Horton with the speck

The Whos ask Horton to protect them from harm, to which Horton was only happy to agree, proclaiming throughout the book that "a person's a person, no matter how small". However, he is ridiculed and forced into a cage by the other animals in the jungle for believing in something that they are unable to see or hear. Leading the group are Vlad Vladikoff, the Wickersham Brothers and the Sour Kangaroo.

Horton tells the Whos that they need to make themselves heard to the other animals. If not they will be thrown into the "Beezelnut Oil". The Whos finally make themselves heard by ensuring that all members of their society play their part. In the end it is a "very small shirker named Jo-Jo" whose final addition to the volume creates enough lift for the jungle to hear the sound. Convinced of the Who's existence, the jungle animals vowed to help Horton keep the speck safe and sound.

The Mayor of Whoville

The moral of the story is that no matter how small a person is, he is still a person, a living and breathing one and must not be taken for granted. We should give respect to anyone no matter the size, colour and appearance. Hence, the saying 'A person's, a person no matter how small' applies.

That is the message that I give to my children after the movie and I hope that it will be useful in their character building. Even if the smaller ones do not fully understand the concept, I really hope that the elders will show by example. This is definitely a great movie and I recommend it to everybody to at least watch once. Well, my family have watched it thrice already and it seems that the kids can't get enough of the funny scenes.
